Promoting a career in business to Gen Z
Recently, I completed a week of work experience at Govtech Solutions. I am a student at Pate’s Grammar School going into year 11, and I thought it would be a good idea to do some work experience during the summer. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to do so at Govtech, and it exceeded my expectations.
My week at Govtech opened my eyes to a variety of fascinating careers and gave me an insight into what an excellent company looks like. Thanks to many brilliant people I’ve learned new skills that I will undoubtedly use in the future, and I was able to develop my understanding of departments I previously knew little about.
Since I was going to be spending each day with a different department, my week started with the Project team. Admittedly, this was with my mum, since at first, I felt that spending time in an office might be quite daunting. However, I soon noticed the people at Govtech were incredibly friendly and the atmosphere was far from intimidating. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised by how welcoming it was. On that first day I learned what the process of onboarding a new customer looks like; I also spent some time learning about HR. Thanks to this, I had a new sense of excitement coming in for the rest of the week. I spent a day with the Product team, where I was able to see analysis, webform creation and new product specifications. With Development, an area which I formerly didn’t understand, all became clear after a few patient explanations and demonstrations and I could put another puzzle piece in place for my understanding of Govtech services. I discovered even more from the support team, learning about day-to-day client management and the monitoring of live processing.
My week as a whole was incredibly enjoyable but also vastly informative, and my experience at Govtech has been invaluable and one that I will cherish moving forward. I’ve never seen a company that has seemed so much like a family before, and I would certainly love to work in such a place in the future.
